Glacier National Park Â
Behind the Parks Interview
Join me for a quiet, behind-the-scenes conversation with Frank Felice, composer for Glacier National Park and see the creative decisions, inspiration, and process behind the score.
The Composer
Frank Felice
Frank Felice is an eclectic composer who writes with a postmodern mischievousness: each piece speaks in its own language, and they can be by turns comedic/ironic, simple/complex, subtle/startling or humble/reverent. Recent projects of Felice's have taken a turn toward turn towards the sweeter side, exploring a consonant adiatonicism.
His music has been performed extensively in the U.S. as well as garnering performances in Brazil, Argentina, Japan, China, Greece, Italy, the United Kingdom, the Russian Federation, Austria, the Philippines, the Czech Republic, South Africa, and Hungary. His commissions have included funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Omaha Symphony, Classical Music Indy, the Indiana Arts Commission, The Indiana Repertory Theatre, Dance Kaleidoscope, Music Teachers National Association, the Wyoming State Arts Board, the Indianapolis Youth Symphony, Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma as well as many private commissions.
The Music
Violin Sonata No. 2 Going to the Sun
Written for violin and piano, approx. 20 minutes in duration, audio featuring Vanessa Porter and Gregory Martin.
Here are the composer’s notes on his piece and his home state of Montana,
“This sonata is a very accessible, single movement, 13 episode piece that uses as a framing device the beautiful scenic elements of the park that are close to, viewed from, or a short walk away from the marvelous roadway called the Going to the Sun highway.
My hope is that the music reflects at least some of the beauty of this part of Montana with it’s clear stumbling streams, cloud crowned mountains, green forests, red and grey rocks, multi-colored meadows of flowers, and it’s calm, cold lakes. “
